Hamilton police lay 208 speed-related charged in 4 days

Hamilton police say officers have laid 208 speed-related charges in just four days.

Police launched Project Recalibrate on Monday targeting speeders after seeing a rise in stunt driving throughout the city.

The two-week campaign’s goal is to educate the public and curb the recent speeding trend on Hamilton’s roads.

Police say they caught 208 speeders between May 4 and 7 and laid 10 stunt driving charges at five incidents.

In a post on Twitter, police said one driver was caught going 127 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. “The driver has lost his car and license for a minimum of 7 days. He also has a future court date. The consequences are high and everyone’s safety is at risk,” wrote police.

Last week, police reported a 23 per cent increase in stunt driving since the province declared a State of Emergency on March 17.

Police say while traffic volume may be lighter due to physical distancing and the closure of non-essential businesses, there is still an expectation that motorists act responsibly and within the law.

Project Recalibrate will run until May 15 with officers placed at various locations throughout the city.
