Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority purchases dormant biodiesel plant

The Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) has purchased a dormant biodiesel plant on its property with the goal of operating a refinery.

The Biox Biodiesel Plant has been inactive since last December and HOPA is looking to secure an operator to get it up and running, to turn cooking oil, animal fats and seed oil into biodiesel.

The Ontario government now requires that a portion of biodiesel blended with regular diesel must be produced in Canada.

The port authority says the purchase will supports local jobs, give farmers a reliable market for feedstock and aligns with the transition to marine biofuels.
