CHCH News is learning more about the family that was hit by an out-of-control driver on Ottawa Street on Sunday.
On Sunday afternoon, the family was walking along Ottawa St. near Beech Rd. when the driver of an SUV lost control while going over the train tracks, mounted the curb, and crashed into them.
The young mother, Nicole Constandinides, and her son, Maddox are still in hospital recovering from critical injuries. Nicole’s husband Sean Reid was not seriously hurt and was found on scene cradling his wife and yelling about his step-son Maddox who was critically injured.
Hamilton police say Constandinides remains in critical condition and 10-year-old Maddox is now in stable condition but with life-altering injuries. Police say the driver ran away from the scene after the crash.
“They are always together, they spend every minute, posting pictures, watching movies, going exploring and hiking,” Reid’s cousin describes the family as an “inseparable trio.”
The horrific incident has shaken the community, Ward 3 Councillor Nrinder Nann says she has heard from nearby residents that drivers go way too fast down Ottawa Street and are not prepared for the hump of the train tracks just a little further down.
Nann says she has ordered a technical review of this roadway to potentially implement safety measures immediately, and in the long term.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Sean Reid and his family as they recover.
