Hundreds of people in Hamilton are getting around today, powered by the pedal. This is Bike to Work day, which kicks off bike month.
Hamilton councillor Jason Farr rolled up on a shiny set of wheels. The event, in it’s seventh year, is even bigger this time around.
Hamilton’s Bike Share program is in full operation, with bikes placed around much of the city for people to use and leave as they need. The organizers and Hamilton’s mayor say for getting to work, two wheels are terrific.
Project manager Peter Topalovic says a bike’s not just a toy. “They’re actually a real mode of transportation that are actually going to help cities grow much more sustainably and in a much more cost-effective way.”
Mayor Fred Eisenberger told CHCH News, “It’s healthy, you get a quick round of exercise, it reduces the traffic load in the community at large. We’re making these bike lanes so that people will use them to give themselves a low cost, easier form of transportation.”
Brampton, Toronto and other communities also hosted events for cyclists.
