A Hamilton man wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for second-degree murder has been arrested in San Antonio, Texas.
Police say Ager Hasan was arrested during a traffic stop conducted by the United States Secret Service on Wednesday. Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Mike Haffner held a press conference and said the traffic stop was part of an ongoing counterfeit currency investigation. He was driving the same vehicle he fled Canada in.
Hasan, 24, is accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend Melinda Vasilije. The 22-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment on Country Hill Dr. in Kitchener, Ont on April 28.
Authorities believe Hasan fled to the United States in his mother’s 2016 Honda HRV shortly after Vasilije was stabbed to death.
An Instagram account by someone claiming to be Hasan posted a message on Tuesday saying, “I’m coming home. It’s time to end the dark path I’ve been traveling and give people the closure they deserve.”
Hasan will remain in the custody of San Antonio police and is expected to return to Canada through the extradition process. Waterloo police said they do not believe he will face any charges in relation to the American counterfeit currency investigation.
