A Hamilton man has been arrested and charged by Toronto police in connection to a babysitter recruiting scam.
Officers arrested 31-year-old Kim Manget of Hamilton Friday, and charged him with 22 offences.
Detectives say between October 2024, and this August, Manget was hired for babysitting jobs under the name “Ashley Turnbull”.
Manget would send cheques to his targets and get them to deposit them in their personal accounts, and then transfer that money back to him.
He told his victims the money was to be used for supplies and material needed to babysit.
When the cheques were deposited into victims’ accounts and transferred, they learned the cheques were fake, often days later.
Police say Magnet is facing charges including seven counts of fraud under $5,000 and seven counts of possession and property attained by crime.
Investigators say there were more victims across Canada.
Manget is scheduled to appear in a Toronto courthouse Oct. 1.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-3200, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or at www.222tips.com.
