A Hamilton man has been charged in a July car crash in Binbrook that killed a Cambridge, Ont. mother and daughter after turning himself into police.

Jesse Wood, 24, was arrested on Aug. 13. Hamilton police say his bail has been denied.

Wood was charged with a number of offences, including dangerous operation causing death and dangerous operation causing bodily harm, as well as multiple counts of criminal negligence, impaired and stunt driving and speeding, allegedly driving 155 kilometres per hour in a 60-kilometre zone.

Wood was driving a GMC Sierra pickup truck on Trinity Church Road at around 9:30 p.m. on July 6 when he crossed the centre line to pass another truck and slammed head-on into a Honda Civic carrying four people.

An SUV then rear-ended the Civic, sending it into the ditch.

The crash sent seven people to hospital and claimed the lives of a 10-year-old girl and her 30-year-old mother, Julia Smith. The father of the girl and a family friend were also injured.

A GoFundMe page for the family was set up to assist with funeral costs and raised over $33,000.

Hamilton police say the collision reconstruction unit continues to investigate. Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact 905-546-4753. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Hamilton or called into 1-800-222-8477.
