Hamilton man arrested, another dead after police chase in Northern Ontario

A Hamilton man is facing several charges after a deadly police pursuit in Northern Ontario.

The incident left a 26-year-old man dead and a 76-year-old bystander seriously injured.

Provincial police say they attempted to stop a vehicle near Government Road West and Woods Street in Kirkland Lake on March 7 for drug-related offences, but the driver failed to stop.

A police pursuit ensued on Highway 11 near Portage Bay Road, in which gunfire was exchanged.

The vehicle stopped, and one of the occupants fled the vehicle on foot. The other passenger was found deceased.

Police say they were able to locate the man and make an arrest soon after.

23-year-old Awad Khan of Hamilton has been charged with 16 offences, including:

  • Attempt to commit murder using firearm
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order
  • Resist peace officer
  • Discharge firearm with intent
  • Assault peace officer
  • Firearm – use while committing offence
  • Flight from peace officer
  • Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
  • Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammo
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Escape lawful custody
  • Discharge a firearm into or at a place in a reckless manner
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Dangerous operation

He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court on March 12.

The Special Investigations Unit says it is investigating the incident.
