Hamilton man arrested after stealing groceries, injuring 3 people

Halton police arrested a Hamilton man after he injured three people Wednesday afternoon while fleeing from an earlier theft at a Burlington supermarket.
Officers responded to a shoplifting incident just before 2 p.m. at a Fortinos supermarket at 2515 Appleby Line where a man had allegedly taken a variety of grocery items.
Investigators learned that the man ran to the parking lot after loss prevention officers tried to arrest him. Police say the man tried to escape in a vehicle but crashed into another vehicle before attempting to escape on foot.
After exiting his vehicle, the man was reported to have brandished a knife towards people trying to stop him before police arrived.
Emergency crews say two Fortinos employees and one other person suffered minor injuries.
Halton police arrested 24-year-old Omar Abugalib from Hamilton and is being charged for theft and three counts of assault with a weapon.
Abugalib was held in custody and is scheduled to appear at a bail hearing at a future date.
