From flowers and chocolates, to cozy nights in and “Galentine’s” get-togethers — people in Hamilton are finding their own way to celebrate.
CHCH News hit the streets and checked in with local businesses to see how the city is sharing the love.
Love is in the air and on the streets as Valentine’s Day takes over the city. “I’m meeting with my sister, and my two girls are joining us for Galentine’s,” said Jennifer Gillis.
Some are keeping it low-key. “We’re just gonna stay in with my girlfriend. We’re gonna grab some food, open up a bottle of wine, maybe watch a movie,” says Drew Comeau.
And some? They’re swiping right on themselves. Zofia Bawden says she “will mostly just be de-stressing, listening to music while I do some work for myself.”
It’s not just partners getting spoiled. Jess says her pup will “get some cookies, and then he’ll get a lot of belly scratches.”

Whether it’s romance, friendship or a paw-some celebration, many told us they’re choosing experiences over stuff.
Michael and Alicia Sousa say, “Sometimes it’s just the simple things that bring the most joy and something that you’re not usually doing together every day. Yeah, it’s a lot of fun.”
But flowers — yes, they’re still one of the most popular gifts on this day of hearts. Local businesses say they’re definitely feeling the love. At i fiori flower shop on James Street North, owner Georgina Russell says it’s moderately busier than last year’s Valentine’s Day.
At chocolate shops, sales are getting whipped into shape.
Dan Edwards, owner of Chocolat on James says, “Valentine’s is awesome. I mean, we got to a slow time in January and then once February hits, we ramp up for Valentine’s.”
And restaurants? Full tables with special menus.
Owner of Per’so’na Restaurant, Paula Cipollo, stated that they “have been fully booked for the last three weeks at Per’so’na. It’s been great to see how everybody is coming out with January always being slower because of Christmas. And you know, people are tired. And now with Valentine’s Day, it’s great to be out with friends or with your partner or a loved one— it’s fantastic.”
However you’re spending it, with a partner, a friend, a pet, or just a box of chocolates and time together — everyone agrees it’s all because of love.
