A single-vehicle collision on Hamilton Mountain knocked down a hydro pole and sent the driver of a van to hospital in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Significant damage to the pole located at Mohawk Road East and East 45th Street also caused a power outage and affected vehicular traffic.

Both the driver, a 65-year-old man, and his 69-year-old passenger were transported to hospital.

Mohawk Road East has been closed between Upper Ottawa and East 45th streets for clean-up and a police investigation.

The driver remains critically injured, while the passenger sustained only minor injuries.
