Gun crimes and mandatory minimum sentences for them will be the focus for Ontario’s highest court Tuesday as it begins hearing six cases on the issue this week.
A special five-judge panel of the Court of Appeal will consider the constitutionality of minimum sentences for several gun-crime laws. Critics say mandatory minimums don’t reduce crime and do more harm than good. But both the federal and Ontario governments will argue in support of the harsher sentences.
