(Video updated) Erin Mielzynski captured Canada’s first gold medal in a women’s World Cup slalom race in more than 40 years.

The 21-year-old skier – who was born in Brampton, but now calls Guelph home – had her breakthrough performance at a race in Ofterschwang, Germany.

Mielzynski captured her first gold in a women’s World Cup slalom race. She had never placed higher than 13th on the world cup circuit, but used a strong second run to win.

The last Canadian woman to win a World Cup slalom was Betsy Clifford in 1971.
