Ground breaking for skate park

A ground breaking ceremony took place Wednesday in Fonthill at the site where the new Isaac Riehl Skate Park will be built.

A grassroots community movement to build a skate park somewhere in pelham gathered steam after the 14-year old died last October after being hit by a car while he was long boarding with friends. Wednesday, Isaac’s parents Ted and Bonita, his older brother Jacob, and the key people responsible for getting this skate park built grabbed shovels, and broke ground at Marlene Stewart Streit Park.

Bonita said: “He would probably think it was crazy of me to come down here every single day and take pictures of this. But I know he’d be honoured in knowing that there was something fun for kids here and he’s completely honoured to know that this was for him.”

And Isaac’s brother Jacob said: “I think he’d love it. It’s a great place for them to hang out with his friends and he lovesbeing outsideand being active so he’d really enjoy this.”

Construction started eight days ago. It’s expected to be open for skate boarding by the end of October.
