Grand Erie Public Health confirms first human case of West Nile Virus this season

Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) has confirmed its first human case of West Nile Virus this season in Brantford.

Public health officials say that while most people who are bitten by an infected mosquito do not become ill, West Nile Virus can cause serious illness in some people.

It says older adults and people with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of developing severe illness.

“As West Nile Virus activity continues to be detected in our region, we want to remind residents that simple preventive measures can make a big difference,” says Dr. Jason Malenfant, medical officer of health at GEPH.

“Using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing and eliminating standing water around your home are effective ways to reduce the risk of mosquito bites and exposure to West Nile Virus.”

In 2025, two human cases of West Nile virus were reported in the GEPH region. So far this season, two mosquito pools have also tested positive for West Nile Virus.
