Gordie Howe International Bridge opening delayed

The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been postponed as Canada and the United States take time to resolve any outstanding issues.

This decision comes just days after invitations were sent for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the $6.4 billion between Windsor and Detroit on Friday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that the bridge would be open by the end of the week but changed his message on Wednesday, saying the bridge may take a little longer.

In February, U.S. President Donald Trump said the country would need to be compensated before he would allow the bridge to open.

Canada paid for the Gordie Howe Bridge construction in full. Those costs are meant to be recovered through bridge tolls that will be shared with Michigan once it’s fully paid for.
