The government of France has made a Hamilton World War II veteran a member of its Legion of Honour.

Frank Volterman received the medal at the age of 96 for his heroic involvement in the 1942 raid of Dieppe, where almost a thousand Canadian soldiers died fighting to help liberate France from the Nazis.

The highest award that France gives to a foreign citizen was presented by Royal Hamilton Light Infantry commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Gary McQueen.

Volterman was badly wounded during the battle.
