Four people in hospital after apartment fire on east Hamilton Mountain

Hamilton fire says four people have been taken to hospital after an apartment fire Saturday morning on the east mountain.

At approximately 8:52 a.m., fire crews received multiple reports of a fire at 987 Mohawk Rd. East between Regency Street and Moxley Drive.

Upon arriving, officials say they saw heavy black smoke and flames coming from an apartment on the third-floor of the three-story building.

Crews entered the apartment and located one person without vital signs. With the help of paramedics, the person was revived and transported to hospital in critical condition.

Three more people were rescued and transported to hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire was quickly brought under control, but crews say the apartment suffered significant damage. Two apartments below the burning unit also suffered water damage.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and is assisting the investigation.

At this time, no cause of the fire has been provided.

Officials estimate damage costs to be around $500,000.
