Fort Erie man receives medal
On Thursday, it was announced that a Fort Erie man was among 20 people to receive the latest Carnegie Medal for extraordinary acts of heroism.
In June 2008, 52 year old John David Pearce dove into a swift current to save a woman from drowning.
57 year old Mary C. Barnes was fishing from the bank of the Niagara river, when she fell into the water and was swept downstream by the current.
Pearce jumped into his vehicle and drove downstream to a point where he could intercept Barnes and swam out to her.
The Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission has handed out more than 33 million dollars in more than 94-hundred awards since they began in 1904.
