First human case of West Nile Virus confirmed in Toronto

Toronto Public Health is reporting the city’s first case of West Nile Virus.

A 68-year old man was infected with the virus in mid-July and is now recovering at home.

Public health officials are warning people to take extra caution this long weekend. That includes wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks when outdoors, especially when mosquitoes are most active.

They also encourage residents to remove any standing water from their property to avoid mosquito breeding.

Last year, Toronto had a total of 94 human cases of West Nile Virus, up from 28 in 2011.
