Fire guts garage
Updated Hamilton fire crews were called to a garage fire behind a home in the city’s north end today.
Around 11:30 this morning, flames broke out in the garage, which housed a heating and air conditioning business on Wentworth Street North. Police had to shut down Wentworth between Barton and Cannon.
There’s still no word yet what caused the fire. The roof of the garage collapsed and the business has been destroyed. Damage is estimated at around $40,000.
No one was hurt, but the tenants who live in the home attached to the garage had to be evacuated.
“I got a call from a friend of mine saying the garage was on fire and then I called my girlfriend right away because she is pregnant and she’s due anytime and my first concern was for the baby so I wanted to make sure everything was ok and the fire wasn’t in the house.”

Fire officials say there were some propane tanks inside, but they were empty. They didn’t find any other hazardous materials inside, but emergency crews had masks on, because of the heavy black smoke.
