Four people were killed in a fiery crash in Brampton Monday night. Witnesses say the two cars immediately burst into flames after colliding on Bovaird drive near Gillingham drive at around 8:45 pm. On-lookers were seen desperately trying to help, but heavy flames kept them at bay.
24-year old Brian McGinnis of Georgetown, his 22-year-old girlfriend Lauren Bouchard of Brampton and her 16-year old sister all died when the Kia they were travelling in was struck by a Trans Am going in the wrong direction. That driver, 49 year-old Calisto Mendonca of Brampton also died.
Police say Mendonca, the driver of the Trans Am was travelling westbound on Bovaird drive when he lost control of his vehicle crossed over the barrier and crashed into the Kia head-on.
Dawn Barristo was there when it happened. “The west bound car was here and you know how when they gun their motor and they go fast you you hear that roar? Then there was a loud bang and then he crossed the median and everything burst into flames.”
Police say they are still trying to determine what caused the driver to lose control. “Speed is a possibility. Excess speed by the one vehicle losing control and crossing the median. There could be a vehicle malfunction, a tire blow that would result in the vehicle crossing over, distracted driving.”
The Peel police major collision bureau has taken over the investigation.
