Ex Machina is a science fiction film written and directed by first time feature filmmaker Alex Garland. The film already released in the U.K. and had its U.S. premiere at the South by Southwest festival. Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Oscar Isaac star.
Caleb, a 24 year old coder at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to Nathan, the reclusive CEO of the company. But when Caleb arrives at the remote location he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl.
The stars of the film had nothing but praise for their rookie director, who has spent most of his career as a screenwriter for films like 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Dredd. “He has so much respect for, and takes so much interest and inspiration from, the different departments on the film,” says Gleeson. “He trusts people will come up with even better stuff when you test them, and that’s what has happened here. People are firing on all cylinders.”
