Electrical issue suspected in $30K Hamilton apartment fire

Hamilton fire says an electrical malfunction is believed to be the cause of an apartment blaze that resulted in about $30,000 in damages.

On Monday at around 9 p.m., crews responded to 95 Hess St., near Queen and Main streets, for reports of a fire.

Upon arrival, responding crews saw visible smoke and flames coming from the eighth floor of the building.

Firefighters quickly located the affected apartment and determined that the fire was confined to the unit’s balcony, with no extension into the interior living space.

Crews extinguished the fire and prevented further spread. Several propane cylinders and batteries were found on the balcony and were safely managed by firefighters during operations.

Fire crews say there were no injuries reported to residents or firefighters.

Hamilton fire reminds residents to ensure electrical equipment and devices are properly maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer recommendations to reduce the risk of fire.
