Over thirty firefighters worked overnight to put out a townhouse fire in Burlington that sent one person to hospital with smoke inhalation.

The multi-unit blaze started around 1:30 a.m. on Walkers Line near Upper Middle Road.

Witnesses to the event say the fire started with an explosion, when it broke out in the complex.

“Giant ball of fire, reaching into the sky,” one witness told CHCH News.

The Burlington Fire Department says crews spent five hours at the scene, and the damage is estimated at $2 million.

The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) was notified promptly.

“Fire did go into the attic space, which caused several units to be affected by the fire in the attic,” Jill Carter with the OFM said.

As a result of the blaze, one person was injured and subsequently treated in hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
