Most of Southern Ontario is cleaning up, after being blasted with the year’s first winter storm.  A mix of wet snow, rain and ice pellets caused headaches for motorists, cancelled flights, uprooted trees and knocked out power to hundreds of people.

Snow began around 6pm and changed to freezing rain overnight, creating hazardous driving conditions. OPP responded to over 300 collisions since last night, including a tractor trailer that jackknifed on the eastbound lanes of the QEW in Oakville.

Poor weather conditions caused major disruptions at Pearson International, a total of 62 flights were cancelled.

Salters and snowplows were removing snow well into the afternoon, “it was a different storm, there was quite a variation of precipitation type as we responded accordingly.” Bob Paul from the City of Hamilton.

City workers clearing roads and sidewalks today got a helping hand from mother nature as rising temperatures turned snow into water.
