A 71-year-old man has died after police believe he lost control of his vehicle, leading to a head-on collision on a Pelham highway Thursday afternoon.

Niagara police say the driver of a white Impala was travelling southbound on the Merrittville Highway when he lost control and veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a black SUV around 5 p.m.

The driver of the white Impala was rushed to hospital, where officers say he was pronounced deceased.

The passenger in that vehicle, a 67-year-old man, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an out-of-region hospital.

Police say both the driver, a 21-year-old woman, and the passenger, a girl under the age of 18, of the black SUV sustained minor physical injuries.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing by the region’s collision reconstruction unit. Police have not confirmed whether it is believed weather played a factor in the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 905-688-4111, option 3, ext. 1008389.
