Dog killed in early morning fire in Hamilton’s north end

Three people are safe following an early morning fire that claimed the life of a dog at a commercial property in Hamilton.
Emergency crews were called to a fire involving shipping containers at 468 Wentworth St. North shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The blaze was quickly put out and three people were assessed at the scene but didn’t require any medical treatment.
Investigators believe the shipping containers were being used as shelter by a group of people.
Fire officials say an overheated cable connected to batteries within the container caused the fire.
The damage is estimated at $5,000.
Last month, police executed a search warrant at a pop-up scrap business at the same address.
It was closed down after officers uncovered an illegal business that was allegedly buying stolen scrap metal and selling it from sea containers and concrete outbuildings on the property.
At the time, Hamilton police said 14 people were found living inside the containers as well as evidence of drug use, and $10,000 worth of stolen property.
