The head of the U.S. mining company that now owns Stelco was in Hamilton Thursday, meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.

The CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs Lourenco Goncalves met with Freeland following her appointment to lead the newly revived Canada U.S. Cabinet Committee.

The committee is responsible for trade talks with U.S. president elect Donald Trump.

“It’s a great pleasure to be here at Stelco, our new company – the steel company of Canada,” said Goncalves. “And the company will continue to be the steel company of Canada.”

Freeland says she has a long tradition of relying on Stelco’s leadership for good advice on Canadian industrial policy.

The $3.4 billion dollar acquisition of Stelco by Cleveland-Cliffs was approved by the federal government last week.

Under new management, Stelco’s headquarters must be kept in Hamilton and the new owners must keep the same number of unionized workers for at least five years.
