The CRTC announced some changes to TV in Canada today. The broadcast regulator has spent the past two years looking at the way Canadians watch tv and how they pay for it. Today, CRTC Chairman Jean Pierre Blais unvieled a high tech looking, old school, antennae as he announced Canadians would still be given access to free over the air signals from broadcasters. By simply using an antennae viewers can watch anywhere from 5 to 20 channels for free.
The ruling got a good reception from the antenna guys, who were at the breakfast meeting annoucment. They say its great for Canadians in general, who feel its too expensive to pay to watch TV.
Experts like Greg O’Brien say television station transmitters cost anywhere from 30 to 50,000 dollars a month to maintain and that’s bad news for small, local broadcasters.
The regulator also ruled that broadcasters can continue the lucrative practice of substituting Canadian commercials for American ones in live broadcasts. However, there is one exception. Starting in 2016 Canadians will get to see American ad’s during the Super Bowl.
