Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire at a home on Crosthwaite Ave. in Hamilton’s east end.

Crews were called to a structure fire at the house, located near Kenilworth Ave. S and King St. E, around 6:30 a.m. Friday.

When they arrived, smoke was coming from the roof of the two-storey home.

Officials say it started as a basement fire that extended into first and second floor.

“One of our challenges this morning is that the fire has compromised the floors on the first and second floor at the rear of the building,” Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunlifee told Morning Live.

“We’ve had to pull our crews out of the back. We are still working at the front of the structure and we’re working from the outside – we’ve got ladders up on both sides and the rear.”

No one was home at the time and there were no injuries reported.

The homeowner says renters were supposed to move in on Saturday.
