Members of the Knights of Columbus were in Hamilton Wednesday to distribute 2,500 coats to children in need.

Their Coats for Kids says it aims to deliver 40,000 coats across the country by the end of the winter season.

David Hansen, Director of Education with Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, says each coat donated is a brand new coat.

“Not only does it provide warmth and a good opportunity for our students — it’s so dignified for them because it’s a brand new coat for them like every other kid out there on the yard,” he said.

A statement released by the Knights of Columbus says without a winter coat, many Canadian children are unable to play outside, wait for the school bus or even attend school in harsh conditions.

The Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids campaign has distribution events planned over the next four months, including in Indigenous and northern communities.
