City of Hamilton issues drug alert for possible PCP in opioid supply

Hamilton public health has issued a drug alert after a notable increase in drug-related EMS calls and Emergency Room visits.
Officials say there were 39 paramedic responses to drug-related emergencies in the week of May 26 – June 2. That’s the largest number in a week since September 2023.
Unusual overdose symptoms were also noted during this period – including slow and shallow breathing, turning purple quickly, and uncontrolled or erratic body movement. City officials say this may be due to phencyclidine (PCP) in the opioid supply.
Individuals who use street drugs are being warned to take precautions, including not using alone and taking smaller doses.
The National Overdose Response Service can be reached at 1-888-688-6677 for anonymous 24-hour support before and while using substances.
