The City of Hamilton is continuing to make changes to Main St. in its pursuit of creating safer roads for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

City council approved in May a motion detailing safety improvements to major streets in Hamilton, including the conversion of Main St. from a one-way to a two-way road.

Emily Trotta, City of Hamilton communications officer, said crews have made progress over the past month.

“No right turn on red restrictions have been approved by council and implementation has been completed on Main St.,” Trotta said.

“Pedestrian ‘countdown’ signals installations have begun on Main St. with Locke St., Caroline St., Hughson St., John St. and Catharine St. completed. The remainder of intersections are expected to be installed by the end of August.”

The majority of intersections on Main St. now have painted ladder crossings as well.

Trotta noted a preliminary design for the pedestrian scramble at Main St. and Summer’s Lane has been completed. Construction is expected to begin in late 2022 or early 2023.

These changes come as Hamilton faces one of its deadliest years for pedestrians. At least 11 pedestrians and one cyclist have died this year.
