City of Burlington cleans up after flood

It’s been six days since Burlington was hit with the worst flooding in over 30 years.

The clean up is getting into high gear but for residents without adequate insurance coverage it’s going to be a long, tough road ahead. Burlington streets are lined with dumpsters as clean up crews remove loads of rotten, water soaked debris.

Gabriella Couto said her 70-year-old mother lost her car, parrot and other prized possessions in the flood. They found out none of the damage is covered by insurance.

The city has applied to the province for disaster relief and has set up a fund through the United Way to raise money to help people in the long term.

Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring said the city is doing everything it can to help. Goldring said there are groups mobilizing that can provide manual labour to those who need significant work done and don’t have the insurance coverage.

Goldring said he hopes to make an announcement on the issue early next week.
