Hamilton police are investigating a suspicious fire that started last night in a vacant house near the Stoney Creek waterfront.

Fire crews responded to the structure near the QEW and Fruitland Road around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival it was fully engulfed in flames.

A neighbour who lives a street away saw flames coming out of the house and ran over to see what was going on.

She told CHCH she was surprised to see how fast emergency crews were at the scene.

The blaze was battled from the outside because of structural damage concerns.

Crews remained at the property due to hot spots and the fire reignited at 4 a.m. Firefighters managed to get it under control.

It is not yet known how the fire started, and police say damages are estimated to be $200,000.

One officer remains on scene while they wait for the arson unit to arrive to investigate.
