Carney ‘appalled’ by targeting of two Jewish-owned Toronto bakery locations

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is appalled that two locations of a Jewish-owned bakery chain, places he called “fixtures of Toronto’s Jewish community,” were damaged over the weekend.

Carney said in a social media post that Jewish Canadians should be able to “live, work and worship free from fear, intimidation and hate,” and his government will continue to combat antisemitism.

Toronto police say they are investigating two incidents involving separate locations of Kiva’s Bagel Bar late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Police say a dark-coloured SUV pulled up outside one of the bakery’s locations near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West on Saturday night, and the front window was damaged before the SUV took off.

Police say gunfire from a vehicle hit the front windows of another bakery location near Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue West about an hour later.

They say both stores were closed at the time and no injuries were reported.

Investigators believe the same SUV may be linked to both incidents and have released an image of the vehicle.
