An east Hamilton family escaped injury early this morning after a blaze broke out in their basement.

Smoke detectors woke them up, and their screams alerted neighbours to what was happening. Fire crews arrived at the house on Tate Ave at about 5 o’clock this morning.

Claudio Mostacci of Hamilton Fire told CHCH News there was $100,000 damage, and the basement was gutted. The cause: a candle ignited some bedding.

While no people were hurt, 3 cats, and 2 guinea pigs perished.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this post referred to the residence as a townhouse. This has been corrected.
