Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand has announced that Canada is imposing more sanctions against Iranian entities involved in weapons production.
A news release from Global Affairs Canada says the sanctions are being imposed against five individuals and four entities under the Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations.
Global Affairs says the additional sanctions target Iranian businesspeople and companies tied to procurement networks supplying advanced technology for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ weapons programs.
The Canadian government says Iran’s transfer of arms, drones and other military technology to foreign governments such as Russia for use in its war against Ukraine “threatens the sovereignty of other states and violates international norms.”
Ottawa says the sanctions send a message that Canada will enforce penalties against entities supporting Iran and its destabilizing activities. They go on to say Canada will not tolerate actions that undermine regional and international peace and security.
