Statistics Canada reported today that the economy added 7,400 jobs in April but the unemployment rate rose for the second straight month to 6.9 per cent — matching a recent high from November.

According to the national statistical agency the increase in the jobless rate may indicate employers aren’t hiring as quickly as the population grows.

A poll of economists had predicted a gain of over 2,000 jobs in April and a rise in the unemployment rate to 6.8 per cent.
