Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says Canadian aircraft carried out an airdrop of nearly 10,000 kg of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza Monday.

The Canadian Armed Forces filled a CC-130J Hercules aircraft with 21,600 lbs of supplies and dropped the much needed support of Global Affairs Canada into the Gaza Strip.

Global Affairs says access to humanitarian aid in Gaza is, “severely restricted and humanitarian needs have reached an unprecedented level.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X just after noon Monday that Canada is “intensifying” efforts with international partners to develop a peace plan and ensure aid reaches Palestinians.

Earlier this week, Israel had loosened restrictions on food and medicine reaching the Gaza Strip in response to an international outcry over starvation in the Palestinian territory.

Global Affairs Canada says the country’s humanitarian partners are facing severe challenges in delivering life-saving food and medical assistance by land, due to ongoing restrictions imposed by the Israeli government.

“This obstruction of aid is a violation of international humanitarian law and must end immediately,” reads a statement released Monday.

“The two-state solution, with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in security, remains the only viable pathway to a just and lasting peace,” further reads the statement.

The Canadian government also thanked the country of Jordan for facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
