Canada to make an ‘important’ announcement in St. Catharines

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra is set to make an “important funding” announcement at 10 a.m. at the Port Weller Dry Docks Shipyard.

There are no further details about the announcement. However, Ottawa has made shipbuilding a priority, hoping to revive its industry.

The national shipbuilding strategy aims to deliver a new fleet of vessels to the navy and coast guard.

Last month, a shipyard in Quebec was added to its multi-billion dollar plan, the other two are in Halifax and Vancouver where they have experienced delays in production.

In 2022, Port Weller was awarded a contract for an icebreaker project and they’ve said they want to be apart of Ottawa’s national strategy.
