Canada to announce retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products

We are expecting more details Friday on Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on American products.

This follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement Thursday that he’s restoring an import tax on raw aluminum from Canada.

That tax will come into effect Aug. 16.

“The Aug. 6 announcement by the United States to impose tariffs on certain Canadian aluminum products, citing national security concerns, is unwarranted and unacceptable,” said Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland in a statement.

The Canadian government reacted to the news by promising dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs.

The Ontario government issued a statement says it’s “disappointed” in the decision to reinstate aluminum tariffs.

The U.S. imposed the same tariff between June 2018 and May 2019, along with a 25 per cent import tariff on Canadian steel.
