Canada Post faces off with city in court

Canada Post and the city of Hamilton will be in court today looking for a decision on who has ultimate control over the location of community mailboxes.
After hearing a number of complaints, city council decided to require Canada Post to obtain permits to install the superboxes on municipal land.
But Canada Post went to the Ontario Superior Court, saying its federal mandate overrides the local bylaw.
The city doesn’t dispute Canada Post’s right to use municipal land for mailboxes — it just wants the right to make sure the locations are suitable.
Municipalities across the country are watching the case.
