The Calling is a crime thriller directed by Jason Stone. The film centres around detective inspector Hazel Micallef, the interim commanding officer of the Fort Dundas, Ontario police force. Hazel enjoys her quiet existence in the small town and shares a house with her aging mother. One day while investigating a routine call, Hazel stumbles on a horrendous murder scene, and after some investigation, she discovers that the murder is similar to other ones across the country. With a serial killer on the loose, Hazel and her team must stop him before he strikes again. The film stars Susan Sarandon, Ellen Burstyn, Gil Bellows, Topher Grace, and Donald Sutherland.

The cast assembled for The Calling is impressive considering that the film is a Canadian production shot in and around the Hamilton area. The production team has Susan Sarandon to thank for bringing many of the names aboard; most cited the desire to work with Sarandon as their motivation to join the shoot. Sutherland said “I made a film with her in 1983 and I love her… I wanted to be here with her, and I thought I could do something with the role…he’s a linguist. I loved him.” “I’m excited to work with Susan,” Burstyn explained. “We’ve known each other, but we have never worked together before. We have done political things together, but we had never actually worked together before so I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Calling is rated 14A.
