Calgary officer struck and killed by driver fleeing traffic stop
A Calgary police officer has died after being struck by a driver who was fleeing a traffic stop on New Year’s Eve.
“It is with profound sadness and heartbreak that we have to tell you that late yesterday evening we lost one of our police family,” said the Calgary Police Service in a statement.
Calgary police have identified the officer as Sgt. Andrew Harnett, 37, who has been with the force for 12 years.
Police say Harnett was hit just before 11 p.m. on Thursday, as the driver fled a traffic stop.
He died in hospital about an hour later, despite efforts from other officers and paramedics.
Calgary police say they are looking for two men — Al-Azan Shah Muhammad, 17, and Amir Abdulrahman, 19.
They have issued first-degree murder warrants for the pair.
“The profound grief this has brought to all members of the Calgary Police Service and their families is unmeasurable,” police said in the statement.
