Born to Be Blue is a Canadian drama written and directed by Robert Budreau. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and stars Ethan Hawke, Carmen Ejogo, and Callum Keith Rennie.

Born to be Blue is not a traditional biopic but a reimagining of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker’s life in the 60’s. When Chet stars in a film about himself, a romance heats up with the female lead, the enigmatic Jane. Production is shelved when Chet’s past comes back to haunt him and it appears he may never play music again.

“I was first drawn to Chet Baker’s story when I found out two things,” explains Budreau. “One, an inspirational, sympathetic element – that he lost all his teeth and had to mount a comeback; and two, a potentially surreal element – that he was offered to star in a movie about himself that never happened. The fact that Chet’s telling of his own story was clouded with contradiction and improvisation inspired me to be true to the music and the character himself, who like Bob Dylan, created his own myth, his own identity, which was cleverly explored in the film ‘I’m Not There’.”

Born to Be Blue is rated 14A.
