Blue Ruin

Blue Ruin is a revenge thriller film directed by Jeremy Saulnier. Macon Blair stars as Dwight, a homeless drifter whose parents were murdered when he was little. When he gets word that the man responsible for their deaths is being released from prison, Dwight heads back to his childhood home to enact his own idea of justice. However, his parent’s death isn’t as black and white as he had believed, and when the violent feud puts his estranged family in danger, Dwight is forced to go to great lengths to settle the dispute before it’s too late.
Saulnier and Blair have been friends and collaborators for a long time, but this was the first opportunity for Saulnier to direct his friend in a lead role. “I designed the entire project around him,” Saulnier explains, “and leaned heavily on his understated and emotional delivery as well as his indestructible nature — he smashed through glass, leapt from windows, drank blood and endured a fairly gruelling shoot, never mind that he started growing his scuzzy beard nine months prior to financing the film.” Blue Ruin screened at Cannes in 2013 in the Directors’ Fortnight section and won the FIPRESCI Prize.
Blue Ruin is rated 14A.
