Binbrook mom calling on city to take action on neighbourhood confederate flag

Amie Archibald-Varley from Binbrook is calling on the city of Hamilton to take down a confederate flag that’s flying from the front porch of a home in her neighbourhood.
Amie first noticed the flag about six to eight months ago in the area of Guyatt Road and Highway 56. She said she tweeted her disgust, only to be attacked by online trolls.
On Sunday, she and her husband happened to drive by the house, saw the flag was still up, and decided they needed to do something about it. Amie tweeted at the city, which she said told her to contact Hamilton police.
Amie spoke to CHCH News about why the flag is so repugnant to her, and why she thinks the city needs to do more. “The first thing I thought about was my kids. I have racialized children as well. they are mixed.” Amie said she thinks it’s her duty to take action on this issue saying, “I don’t believe that hate should belong here. Or hateful images or symbols should belong here and I think that we, as that we as a community should do something.”
Amie said the city is passing the buck by telling her to contact the police.
On Monday afternoon Hamilton police responded to CHCH News saying they were investigating the incident.
Amie said she has been in touch with the Executive Director of the Hamilton anti-racism resource centre.
Hamilton’s mayor Fred Eisenberger posted to Twitter on Wednesday condemning the confederate flag.
Symbols of hate including the Confederate flag are not welcome in #HamOnt and that's why Council banned them from City property. As a result of the City's Hate Flags & Symbols Report in 2021, I asked in writing to both the federal & provincial governments to ban such symbols. 1/2 https://t.co/I7C4cJIt67
