The investigative journalism film Spotlight surprised many by winning the Best Picture award at the Oscar’s last night. What might also come as a surprise is that the Boston-based film had many scenes shot in Southern Ontario including Hamilton.

Hamilton attracts about 100 productions and collects up to $10 million each year. The low Canadian dollar and Hamilton’s diverse locations are a big selling point.

Toronto Mayor John Tory’s two-day-long trip to Hollywood to sell the city as a go-to destination for big-budget films and expected expansion of Pinewood studios, should only enhance Hamilton’s popularity among film-makers.

Simon Winterson’s Digital Canaries studio has reaped the benefits of filmmakers flocking to work in Hamilton. “Toronto has good spaces, but as soon as you raise the camera up anywhere you’re bound to hit a condo.”

So look out, you might walk onto the set of next year’s Best Picture, right in your own backyard.
